Shelby County Winter Forage Seminar

July 24, 2018 (Flyer/Registration Form) - Texas A&M AgriLife Extension is hosting Shelby County Winter Forage Seminar on August 14, 2018 at 6pm in the Extension office. The cost is $10 per person in advance and $15 at the door. RSVP by August 9, 2018 at the Extension office or by mail with payment.

Herbicide Applications During Dry, Hot Months

July 9, 2018 - Invasive brush can decrease forage productivity for livestock or decrease brush diversity valuable for wildlife habitat. Most ranchers find themselves constantly considering options for brush management, weighing not only the cost and effectiveness, but also when they can find the time to complete the treatments. As temperatures continue to climb across our area and the chances of rainfall seem to be weakening, it’s important to consider the effect this will have on any herbicide applications.

4-H Kids Cooking, Sewing Day Camps to be Offered

June 11, 2018 - Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service - Shelby County will be hosting their annual 4-H Kids Day Camps featuring cooking and sewing during June and July in Center, Texas. This program is open to all youth ages 9 through 18, and you do not have to be a member of 4-H to participate.

May 18, 2018 - The 2018 District 5 4-H Shoot was held at Pines Gun Club in Lufkin, TX on May 5th. District 5 consists of 22 counties in East Texas. Representing Shelby County 4-H Shooters were: Emily Bennett and Rex Payne. The results were as follows:

Emily Bennett-4th in Trap/Skeet, and 2nd in Tower

Termite Swarms Sighted

April 27, 2018 - Last week, our office got a call from one who saw a cloud of flying insects coming out of an old stump. “It almost looked like rising smoke, but it was all bugs,” they said.

What they saw were termites and those termites were swarming.

Adult reproductive termites are dark-brown to blackish insects, about 3/8 inch-long. Commonly referred to as “swarmers”, the job of reproductive termites is to mate and start new colonies. Termite swarmers may or may not have wings, as their wings often are shed shortly after flight.

2018 District 5 4-H Fashion Contest, Roundup Official Results

April 16, 2018 - The District 5 4-H Fashion and Roundup contests were held on April 7, 2018 at Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches. We had several 4-H’ers enter in the Fashion Contest with their duct tape designs and fabric/textile creations. We had several 4-Her’s also enter in the Roundup contests which include taxidermy, share the fun, and photography. A special thank you to all our 4-H parent volunteers for making this an exceptional experience for the youth of Shelby County.
