August 11, 2025 - Good Morning! It’s Monday, August 11.
I’ve recently taken up a new hobby. I grew up in a home where the practice of memorization was highly prized. My father spent his life “hiding” the Word of God in his heart, and encouraged his children to pursue that calling. Over the last half century I’ve been blessed to have had that opportunity.

We’ve come to the end of “Teacher Week” here at the Daily Devotion. My family tree is filled with teachers. Sisters, daughters, nieces, nephews - educators at every level. In my younger years I had the opportunity to serve as a high school choral director. This is a shout out to teachers everywhere. We respect what you do. We acknowledge the difference you make. We commit to lift you up in prayer during this coming school year. Here are some inspiring quotes about teaching.

We continue this morning with “Teacher Week” here at the Daily Devotions. As school years are starting all over America, we take the opportunity to focus on a few Bible characters who made a difference as teachers.
Eli was a priest, a spiritual leader in Israel during the period before the Kings. A young mother named Hannah, who had prayed to have a son, brought that boy to Eli as a tribute to God. The old priest agreed to become the child’s mentor, his guide, his teacher.

School bells start ringing one week from today in Center, Texas. In other East Texas towns, students are already back in class. But wherever you live, it’s a safe bet that teachers have been back at work for a while. And so this morning we begin “Teacher Week” at the Daily Devotions. Behind every great person is a great teacher. Each day this week we’ll look at a Bible character who was called to greatness by God, and the teacher who helped them get there.
August 1, 2025 - Good Morning! It’s Friday, August 1.
As we come to the end of the week, we come to the beginning of a new month - August. As a boy, August was a long, hot, slow, last gasp of summer. A last chance for days of freedom and play. Joseph Priestly was a minister, scientist, theologian, philosopher, and a friend of Benjamin Franklin. And on this day in 1774 he discovered oxygen. Well, I’m not sure that “discovered” is exactly the right word, since people had been breathing for quite a while before that. July 30, 2025 - Good Morning! It’s Wednesday, July 30.

They look miserable. And you know why? Because they’re running! If you see me running down the street, you may safely assume that somebody’s chasing me - somebody big.
July 29, 2025 - Good Morning! It’s Tuesday, July 29.
I watched a documentary on the History Channel last week about William Shakespeare. One interesting feature focused on the hundreds of common phrases we use today that come from his plays. Just to give you a taste, here’s a top ten list.
