David's Daily Devotion for May 13

May 13, 2025 - Good Morning! It’s Tuesday, May 13.

The word “doxology” comes from the Greek - “doxa”, meaning glory, and “logia”, to speak. And so, literally, a doxology is an expression of praise. The “hallelujahs” at the end of many of the Psalms could be considered doxologies. And the back of our hymnals are filled with these brief expressions - explosions - of worship.

David’s Daily Devotion for May 12

May 12, 2025 - Good Morning! It’s Monday, May 12.

Mary Stewart was Queen of Scotland and the rival of the first Queen Elizabeth of England. Mary had a son that she named James, and when he was twenty years old, Elizabeth had Mary, her rival, executed. Sixteen years later, Elizabeth died, and James Stewart became King of the British Empire. James was highly intelligent and well educated, but not a particularly successful monarch. He was often at odds with Parliament and unpopular with his people.

David's Daily Devotion for May 8

May 8, 2025 - Good Morning! It’s Thursday, May 8.

A famous writer once gave an interesting quote about Heaven. He said, “I think that Paradise will be like a big library.” Devout book lovers will see some sense in that - they’re always longing for more time to just sit and read. Eternity in a library sounds pretty good to me.

David's Daily Devotion for May 7

May 7, 2025 - Good Morning! It’s Wednesday, May 7.

This morning, Catholic cardinals from around the world will be locked inside the Sistine Chapel, to begin the religious rite called conclave. The first time this happened, a man named Christopher Columbus was sailing toward a new world. Since 1492, church leaders have met in this beautiful room, underneath paintings by Michelangelo, to choose a new pope. And the tradition continues.

David’s Daily Devotion for May 5

May 5, 2025 - Good Morning! It’s Monday, May 5.

I am a thoughtless person. And this morning I did a thoughtless thing.

I began this blog in March of 2020, sending out daily devotions each week to friends and family through emails, and to anyone through the Shelby County Today website. That was over five years ago, over 250 weeks ago, over 1500 devotions ago.

David's Daily Devotion for May 2

May 2, 2025 - Good Morning! It’s Friday, May 2.

Today’s devotion is all about the numbers 316. There are 49 “3:16” verses in the Bible. Why aren’t there 66 - one for every Bible book? Well, some books, like Psalms, have a 3rd chapter with less than 16 verses. And other books, like Jude, don’t have a 3rd chapter at all.

As we close this week, here are a few notable 3:16s...

David’s Daily Devotion for May 1

May 1, 2025 – Good Morning!  It’s Thursday, May 1.

Happy May Day!  Feel free to dance around a maypole.  But the first day of May has another claim to fame.  On this day, in 1840, England issued the very first postage stamp.  It cost a penny and featured a portrait of Queen Victoria on a black background.  The “Penny Black” stamp is worth a pretty penny today!

David’s Daily Devotion for Apr. 30

April 30, 2025 - Good Morning! It’s Wednesday, April 30.

So, for all you book lovers out there, today’s devotion focuses on one of the most famous and most successful novels in history - Charles Dickens’ “A Tale of Two Cities”. It was first published on April 30, 1859.
