David’s Daily Devotion for Nov. 1

November 1, 2024 - Good Morning! It’s Friday, November 1.

Something happened at my house yesterday that hadn’t happened in a long time. It rained. We’ve been going through quite a dry spell here in Shelby County, and we needed that rain. I needed that rain. As I sat on my porch and watched the long, slow, soaking shower - listened to it, smelled it, enjoyed it - I realized how much I’d missed it. As they say, “Absence makes the heart grow fonder”.

David's Daily Devotion for October 30

October 30, 2024 - Good Morning! It’s Wednesday, October 30.

Here’s an interesting (and timely) internet study - presidential campaign slogans. I chose just a few for you this morning.

  • Tippecanoe and Tyler Too - 1840 - Tyler
  • A Chicken in Every Pot - 1928 - Hoover
  • Happy Days are Here Again - 1932 - Roosevelt
  • I Like Ike - 1956 - Eisenhower

During the last generation the word “hope” has made several appearances.

David's Daily Devotion for October 29

October 29, 2024 - Good Morning! It’s Tuesday, October 29.

Our focus today is on one of the most famous passages in the Bible - the Ten Commandments. But do you know that there was actually not one, but two sets of commandments? Moses brought the first set down from the mountain, saw the golden idol that the Israelite people had built, and angrily threw the tablets to the ground, breaking them into pieces.

David’s Daily Devotion for Oct. 28

Good Morning! It’s Monday, October 28.

On this day in 1886, the very first “ticker tape” parade was held in New York City. It wasn’t in honor of a politician or an athlete or a brave explorer. It honored a woman, a very BIG woman. She stood 151 feet high and weighed in at 500,000 pounds! On that day the Statue of Liberty was officially unveiled.

David’s Daily Devotion for October 25

October 25, 2025 - Good Morning! It’s Friday, October 25.

The great and wise King Solomon was said to have written over 3000 proverbs. We find many of them in the Bible book by that name. Proverbs is one of my favorite books of the Bible - perhaps it’s one of yours. In it we find wise sayings on all sorts of subjects - wealth, poverty, pride, gossip, justice, friends, family, life, death - just to name a few. And these are more than just wise sayings. They are the wisdom of God. Here’s a few proverbs to take you into the weekend.

What makes a great voice? Well, the answer depends on the context. If we’re talking about a great choir voice, it’s the ability to blend in, to not “stick out”. But if we’re talking about a soloist - especially in popular music - it’s the ability to “stand out”, to be distinctive, to be one-of-a-kind.

David’s Daily Devotional for October 23

October 23, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Wednesday, October 23.

On this day in 1956, a new visual medium was unveiled - not film, but tape - video tape.  It wasn't until the 1980's that this new technology was made available to the public.  I remember buying my first video player/recorder about that time. They were huge, the size of a suitcase, and pretty pricey, too. Back then, in my younger days, I prided myself in being on the forefront of new technology. Now, in my old age, I collect antiques. Go figure!

David’s Daily Devotion for Oct. 21

Good Morning! It's Monday, October 21.

Today our focus is on the subject of control.

What do you say when you answer the phone? I guess there's more than one way to do it, but I'm 99% sure you say "hello". In 1876 Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone, and he decided on the word that people should use when they used his invention. He decided we should say "ahoy!". If that had caught on, we'd all sound like sailors every time we got a phone call.
