David’s Daily Devotion for Oct. 3

October 3, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Thursday, October 3.

Here in Shelby County, Texas we're all about . . . chickens! Raising chickens for meat is one of our biggest industries. There's a Tyson plant here and scores of chicken "farms" where half a dozen times a year thousands of chicks are delivered to run around in chicken "houses" until, in just a few weeks, they're the right size for your dinner table. Each American, on average, eats over a hundred pounds of chicken each year. Over 10 billion chickens are raised annually for meat.  Talk about a big business!

David's Daily Devotion for October 2

October 2, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Wednesday, October 2.

I was going through some of my collections the other day and came across a coin with an interesting history - the 1943 Steel Penny. I wouldn't call myself a coin collector, I only have a couple of dozen. I've shared in this venue about one of them, a 2000-year-old Roman coin that I imagine being held by someone who saw Christ.

David’s Daily Devotion for Oct. 1

October 1, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Tuesday, October 1.

Today, former President Jimmy Carter will accomplish something that no other president has accomplished in U.S. history. He will turn 100 years old. In the fall of 1976, there was another historic occurrence, as David Mathis voted for the first time in a presidential election and cast his ballot for the peanut farmer from Plains. Well, it was an historic moment for me!

David Daily Devotion for September 30

September 30, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Monday, September 30.

This devotion first ran on Monday, September 29, 2020.

I have always loved storms. When the thunder starts to rumble, and the lightning starts to flash... I go outside! It's a wonder I'm still alive to write this. At about 4am this morning I was awakened by a nice little storm and as I sat on the porch and watched it, I was reminded of a story about wind and rain and floods - a story that ends a famous sermon.

David’s Daily Devotion for Sept. 27

September 27, 2024 - Good Morning!  It's Friday, September 27.

Today we conclude our week-long series on what the Bible has to say about dealing with disappointment.  I hope it has been a blessing to you.

Yesterday we focused on a character closely associated with the themes of loss and challenge and disappointment - the character Job.  This morning's character, on the other hand,  is usually associated with themes of power and leadership and accomplishment.  But, early on, disappointment threatened all that success.  Today we look . . . at David.

David’s Daily Devotion for Sept. 26

September 26, 2024 - Good Morning!  It's Thursday, September 26.

We continue today with a week-long series on what the Bible has to say about dealing with disappointment.

The Bible uses a variety of tools to teach us - from the poetic phrases of the Psalms to the doctrinal statements of Romans to the prophetic language of Revelation.  But, if you're like me, your strongest link to God's Word is through the stories.

David's Daily Devotion for September 25

September 25, 2024 - Good Morning. It's Wednesday, September 25.

We continue today with our week-long series on dealing with disappointment. What fun, huh? Seriously, I hope these devotions are speaking to you. I know they're speaking to me.

Do you have a nickname? We began this series by focusing on Joseph of the Old Testament. But there's another Joseph that we meet in the New Testament. No, not the husband of Mary, but a Joseph that is actually never called Joseph. We call him Barnabas, a name that, in Aramaic, means "Son of Encouragement."

David’s Daily Devotion for Sept. 23

September 23, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Monday, September 23.

Today we start a five-part series on facing disappointment. We've all dealt with many moments of disappointment, and so God gives us many characters in His Word who dealt with it as well - and came out the other side with renewed hope.

Our first character is perhaps the greatest example of this. He certainly faced as much or more disappointment than any other Bible character. His name was Joseph, and we find his amazing life story in the book of Genesis.
