David's Daily Devotion for June 19

June 19, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Wednesday, June 19.

Most Texans grow up knowing what "Juneteenth" is. That name, a blend of "June" and "19th" is a reminder of the day in 1865 when the Emancipation Proclamation was announced in Galveston. June 19th immediately began to be an annual day of celebration among African Americans in Texas, and the tradition soon spread across the South. And as African Americans began to resettle in the North and in the West, they took this tradition with them. In 2021 it became a national holiday. Happy Juneteenth!

Our system has been down for a couple of weeks due to power outages and so it was good to be back yesterday - sending out the Word.

On June 12, 1942, a young girl turned thirteen. One of her birthday gifts was a small book with a lock on the front - a diary. She began writing in it that very first day, but wondered how the happenings of her humdrum life could ever fill its pages. Less than a month later, the life of Anne Frank changed forever.

On a beautiful spring day in April of 1995, a man parked a van in front of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. It was exactly two years after the FBI siege at Waco. The van was packed with 5000 pounds of explosives, and at exactly 9:02 a timer clock stopped ticking. 660 people were injured, another 168 were killed - 19 of them were children in the day care. It remains the single deadliest act of domestic terrorism in U.S. history.

Well, another Vacation Bible School is in the rear-view mirror. God blessed our church last week with a group of 167 excited kids and 43 great volunteers. Yesterday morning, in our worship service, the kids shared their VBS musical, "Not Your Average Joe", a modern retelling of the story of Old Testament Joseph.
